Urban Homesteading is about looking for ways to become self-sufficient and reduce your impact on the environment, such as by growing your own food, raising livestock, making products such as soap and cheese at home, canning and preserving, and using alternative energy sources.
The next in the Library’s Urban Homesteading series will be on growing your own food, such as fruit, vegetables, and herbs. Join local horticulturist and Canberra Weekly gardening writer Tracey Bool, as she shares her passion and expertise on creating fruit and veg-abundant gardenscapes.
No matter how small or large a space you call home, anyone can grow fruit, veg and all manner of edible goodies in their backyard.
Ms Bool will show you how to select, grow, and nurture a range of productive plants that are suited to our local climate.
Design factors such as planning, establishment, and maintenance will also be discussed. Tracey welcomes your questions and experiences.
The talk on growing your own food will begin at 12.30pm on Thursday September 27, with books on food gardening available for borrowing.
The session is free, but bookings are essential and can be made online, in person at the Library, or by calling on 4823 4435.
In October the Library will continue the Urban Homesteading series with a talk on keeping miniature milk goats at 12.30pm on October 24 and a demonstration on making cheese, including cheese tasting samples, at 5.30pm on October 25.
