I have travelled across many towns in Australia and have seen a lot of different stores and their different signs. I don't stop and think that's horrible, I think that's progress and brings the street alive.

No wonder no one wants to come to Goulburn when they are forced to tone down their signage that has made them the successful business that they are.

Goulburn should be encouraging these stores, not deterring them. I for one am pleased this store is coming to Goulburn as it will bring people from other towns to shop there and than elsewhere in the city.
We have lost a lot of shops lately and the main street is looking dark and dreary. Just my view.

Do we want a ghost town?
I don't see a problem with how Silly Solly's has constructed its signage ('Community bombards council after Silly Solly's signage 'stands out', GP, September 26).
They stuck with the same dimensions as the previous owner. This is why Goulburn has trouble attracting and retaining business.
Perhaps Mayor Kirk would be happier with an empty ghost town?

Time to change attitudes
I agree with Kate Snedfon's comment (GP September 29). I don't have an issue with retailers advertising their premises with signage - especially national ones with Australia-wide corporate signage.
The council and its staff need a big shift in attitude instead of living in their so called heritage past of keeping the 'heritage precinct' looking old and dilapidated with limited redevelopment and restrictions. Do you wonder why we haven't had any major (re) developments in the CBD for over a decade?
The last major redevelopment I recall was the Target building painted in baby poo yellow to please the heritage thinkers. The colour is dull.
The council needs to change its attitude and allow modern energy- efficient building designs in the CBD to see us into the future, but this is not allowed. Old heritage designs are anything but energy efficient; consuming is a better description.
We have an award winning architect in Goulburn renowned for his solar building designs. He should be turned loose to show us what can be done.
Goulburn could be the leading regional town showcasing the future in building designs but the council prefers otherwise.

Adding a touch of colour
What would make Auburn Street in the town centre even nicer would be high hanging baskets filled with flowers, which although requiring maintenance, would add such a special atmosphere.
It would also provide employment for someone when lockdown ceases.
