What has parking to do with heritage? Zero.
Why wheel out the old furphy of parallel verses angle parking as a reason to reject the progressive elements of the plan?
And “old” it is – mostly supported by the old guard who are the very ones that complain about youth moving out of Goulburn.
Do you think young people move away because they can get angle parking in Sydney? Do they move to Canberra so they can get more parking and don’t need to walk a few blocks?
No – they move because of the more progressive attitudes in a city like Canberra: al fresco dining (even in a cold climate), bicycle paths, better facilities – the sorts of things in the CBD plan.
Other country cities are moving with the times and upgrading their CBDs to better fit with the times. If Goulburn keeps on listening only to those that want to keep it as it was, we will all lose out, eventually.
And Mayor Kirk – your job is to inspire and lead, not follow the (old) crowd. We need a progressive outward looking city, fit for the 21st century, not one that constantly wants to re-create the 1950s.
