Family have confirmed that 70-year-old Towrang man Kevin Smith died in the accident. He was towing a caravan on his four-wheel-drive when it jack-knifed on the Hume Highway at Woodbine on the Hume Highway at about 3.15pm.
The 4WD rolled multiple times and Mr Smith and his wife were trapped. The caravan wreckage lay nearby.
Mr Smith died at the scene, police said. Mrs Smith, the only passenger, was taken to Liverpool Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Goulburn Post understands she suffered a fractured back and broken ribs.
The crash occurred in the southbound lane near the Raby Road overpass.
Police said the highway was not closed but temporary lane closures had traffic backed up for many kilometres.
The cause is still unknown.
The Post understands the Smiths lived in Goulburn for a time before moving to Towrang many years ago. He was well known and involved in the community, including with the RFS.
The couple was returning from holidays at the time.
