The western side of the Currowan fire between Nerriga and the Monga/Northangera area is now being called the Charleys Forest Fire, within the Queanbeyan-Palerang Local Government area.
This large fire is burning between Nowra in the north, Braidwood in the west, and Batemans Bay in the south.
At 3pm on Christmas Day, RFS Zone Manager Peter Alley said they were confident they were getting on top of this fire.
"Crews are taking advantage of more favourable weather to undertake backburning operations where conditions allow," Mr Alley said.
"We have had crews there over the past few nights and they have not requested any further crews today.
"As far as I'm aware in the northern end the crews are pretty comfortable with it.
"There is still fire in the landscape but it is being contained, essentially.
"There is fire in the Shoalhaven that is still free burning. That is inaccessible and we are looking at that should it happen to cross the Shoalhaven River eventually, and it is a fair way off that at the moment.
"The weather is looking fine for the next 4-5 days, so that is unlikely to happen, but we have already looked at containment options on our side of the river, so we will be in preparation for that should it eventuate."
Earlier
On Tuesday, December 23, a spokesperson from the RFS Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre said the fire had crossed Main Road 92 and had travelled a considerable distance to the north.
"It is in behind Bendura Dam and Ettrema," he said at the time.
"The size of the fire has increased dramatically. We are starting to look at containment lines at Tolwong Road and the Shoalhaven River and there is potentially a risk to dwellings to the east of that area, at Burier, Budgong and potentially into the Kangaroo Valley. "
He did not also rule out the fire travelling to Bungonia.
"That is a while out, but if you looked at how that fire progressed on Saturday, that is a possibility," he said.
"There is still active fire in Nerriga area but crews are aggressively mopping that up."
