School returns this week, and that also means back to work for me, after a year at home with our new baby and our pre-schooler. My husband started a new job, too, further from home, so our daily routine needed a shake-up.

This year, I’ve decided, we’re going to be organised. No running around in the morning, looking for the car keys or calling out “Where’s my other shoe?!”, or realising we forgot to defrost something for dinner at 6pm and calling for take-away. We’re going to be prepared!
And so, while the kids ate dinner on Sunday night, I meal-prepped. I cooked up a big batch of mince, packed with veggies, and a stack of marinated chicken strips. We’ll use the mince for family dinners this week, and the chicken will go well in wraps for lunches for us grown-ups. And those online ‘preppers’ are right – it didn’t actually take me that long.
Pinterest tells me that my three-year-old can help with simple chores, so after dinner he helped me unpack then reload the dishwasher, before helping his dad pack the day-care bags, prattling off a list of everything he and his little brother need.
While my husband bathed the boys, I put on a load of washing to hang out in the morning, then got my own work bag together, making sure to include a reusable water bottle so I’m not adding to landfill. The kids went to sleep at an almost-reasonable hour, and we were ready.
It feels so good to be organised, and to know that we can stick to a plan. Well, for day one at least! Only a little over 200 working days to go this year, right?
