Sharing food is important to families and communities and is also featured in many of our activities.
Australia has a variety of foods and many dishes today have incorporated ingredients from other cultures. New dishes with international influences are popularised on TV cooking programs, and the drive towards healthier food often incorporates traditional ingredients.
Some of the past influences on Australian cuisine have been Italian and Chinese, while more recent influences have come from Thailand and Mexico.
Italian cuisine is well-known for its traditional ingredients and includes pasta, pizza and risotto. Chinese cooking styles include Cantonese, Shandong and Sichuan (the spiciest). Mexican food has staples such as corn and chili peppers as well as native ingredients including tomatoes and avocados. Thai food has fragrant and spicy ingredients from its many regions.
We could go on and list the many more international cuisines that are available and the many new ones that are appearing each year.
At our recent food competition, clients were very keen to try Irish stew as well as the scones with jam and dollops of cream.
Goulburn Multicultural Centre introduces new arrivals to the local supermarkets, and shows them where to find local or substituted ingredients to prepare their familiar traditional meals.
Information sessions have also focused on healthy life style and healthy eating.
