Since 1994, the Watoto Children’s Choirs have toured the world annually as advocates for the 18 million African children currently orphaned by AIDS.
The choirs have performed before presidents and royalty in the White House, Buckingham Palace, the United Nations and many other parliaments. They are bringing their concert, ‘Signs & Wonders’ for a six-month tour in Australia.
The concert will feature songs that share the stories of the children and the hope they have because of God’s love. All performances are free and open to the public.
The songs...share the stories of the children and the hope they have because of God’s love.
Watoto is a holistic child care solution initiated to serve the dire needs of the people of Africa. Each child in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents, but they have now been rescued.
They live in a Watoto village or a neighbouring community where they are supported by Watoto’s Neighbourhood project.
Ivan Masembe (13) is excited to be part of the Watoto Children’s choir, touring Australia in 2018.
“I hope to see kangaroos and look forward to meeting people at the different places we’ll be performing at. My favourite thing about the production is the dancing,” says Ivan.
Before he joined Watoto, his father had abandoned their family, leaving his unemployed mother without support.
Ivan remembers how Watoto came alongside his mother at a time that they were really desperate and didn’t know where their next meal would come from.
Through the Watoto Neighbourhood project, his mother was equipped with practical skills to help support herself and her family. Ivan was also offered to be educated at Watoto School.
“Since joining Watoto, I learned how to be excellent in everything I do. They taught me how to respect people, work with others, and help my mother,” said Ivan.
“While I’m on the road with the choir, I am going to share the story of the miracles that Jesus has done in my life, and hope it will help people to know that, in Christ, there is nothing to fear.”
The choir will perform their free concert at St Bartholomew’s Church, Denison Street, Crookwell, on August 29 at 7pm.
