GMC clients also have many of their own community celebrations, including Chinese New Year and the Diwali celebrations of India. The Goulburn Filipino community celebrate Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) with traditional dances, displays of flowers and devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Chinese New Year is one of the world's most prominent celebrations, involving the largest annual mass human migration in the world. It is a major holiday in China and has influenced lunar new-year celebrations in many countries including Australia. It honours ancient ancestors and includes the annual family reunion dinner, traditional cleaning of the house to sweep away bad spirits and decorations in the lucky colour red, as well as letting off lots fireworks.
Diwali is the Indian Hindu festival celebrating the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Houses are decorated with lights and candles, people clean and decorate their homes, wear new clothes and families pray together as well as share food and gifts. The local Malayali Indian community will also have a big celebration of their Onam harvest festival in Goulburn on August 25.
Ramadan is a month of day-time fasting and prayer by Muslim communities around the world. Ramadan aims to cleanse the soul, to feel more empathy for those who are less fortunate and ends with the sharing food at the Eid celebration.
Goulburn Multicultural Centre knows that local residents and local communities make celebrations happen and you need people to celebrate with. Life is a celebration.
