Club secretary and event organiser, Sam White, said the inspiration for it had simmered in the back of his mind for some time, and he had recently decided to take action.
“It’s been [on] my mind for quite a while,” White said.
“I just don’t know if young kids these days know what they’re taking or if anybody’s ever told them.
“I think we need a lot more drug awareness in our schools and on TV.”
Local police were quick to put White in touch with the PCYC, who agreed to help him organise the event.
“I spoke to Cheryl about it, and told her what my idea was,” White said.
“We were just going to do it for the Motor Cycle Club kids … [but] I’m also quite involved with the Goulburn Rugby Union, so I thought we might have it up at Poidevin Oval and involve their kids as well.”
As interest from the rugby and motor cycle clubs kept growing, White then decided to make the event open to everyone and anyone who wanted to attend.
The evening is titled ‘The Effects and Risks of Using Drugs’.
The event flyer indicates attendees will be educated as to how drugs are made, what goes into them, what effect they have, how to help someone using drugs or alcohol, and what support services are available.
White has heard some skepticism from some members of the public about the effectiveness of an awareness evening, but has not let it lessen his drive for the event.
“A few people have said to me, You think it will really make any difference?” he said.
“My idea is, if it makes one person think twice, it’s got to be a benefit.
“Just awareness is my goal. To make kids aware of what they’re taking, who makes these drugs, and where they come from, and what they can do to you.”
The awareness evening begins at 6.30pm on Thursday January 24 at Poidevin Oval, on Addison Street.
Children aged under 16 years are required to seek permission from a parent or adult guardian before attending, but White emphasised people of any age who are interested are welcome to attend.
