Marulan Lions president Marlene Skipper is upset by the idea. “The toilet block was painted by members of the Marulan Lion’s Youth Group after the building and its interior was frequently vandalised,” she said.
“Goulburn artist Margie Fitzpatrick worked with the kids and supervisors on the Lions project and it has become a memorial to the members of the Youth Group.”
“The existing toilet block proudly displays murals on all four walls depicting the life of the Marulan people.
“Each of the four walls to this block have been lovingly painted and brought to life by a Goulburn artist,Margie Fitzpatrick, together with more than 35 local children belonging to the Marulan Lions Youth Club. Each child has their hand print in the mural
“At the 'Marulan Village Plan working party' meeting it was decided to demolish the' Lions Youth Club' legacy in our village.”
Cr Peter Walker, who is on the working party, said the decision to replace the toilet block was decided by a majority of the committee.
“The proposed toilet block is similar to those that have replaced the aged facilities in several parks around Goulburn,” he said.
Artist Margie Fitzpatrick who worked on the project, she thinks back in the 1990s said she was surprised the toilet block was still standing.
“Murals are generally not seen as permanent, forever artworks and are frequently replaced over time,” she said. ”Quite frankly I am surprised it is still there. I must take some photos of it before it is pulled down.
“The best way to preserve the art and the memories of the project is to photograph it and display copies of them where the community can view this history.”
