Those are the words of Goulburn High School teacher Eddie Teague who spoke at the school's Remembrance Day assembly.
Staff and students at Goulburn High were among millions of people across the country and the world who stopped on November 11 to commemorate those who have fought in war and sacrificed their lives.
"Students, we have so much to be thankful for in this country," Mr Teague said.
"We talk about sacrifice in our lives and how difficult it can be. Just remember the greatest sacrifice is when you sacrifice your own happiness or life for the sake of someone else.
"Soldiers as young as some of you Year 8 students here today gave their lives for Australia. They gave their lives so we could have our freedoms in this great country."
School captain Lachlan spoke about the significance of the day and also read the poem In Flanders Fields.
"Remembrance Day is the day we come together to recognise the efforts and sacrifices made for our country, Not only in war, but in all conflicts," he said.
"Remembrance Day gives us an opportunity to appreciate the country we live in."
The Last Post was played and a minute's silence held before students and staff then laid poppies at the front of the school.
