In the last two years, the Division One team has come into its own in the Hockey ACT Capital League and has qualified for finals in both 2020 and 2021(although only one series was actually played due to the statewide COVID-19 lockdowns late last year).
As the popularity and strength of the women's side has grown, the GDHA stated last week its intent to put forward a second women's team, and invited any players aged 13 and up to register.
"Something that has been discussed over previous years, and something that looks likely to come to fruition this season is the addition of a Womens CL2 Team to take part in the Hockey ACT Capital League Competition," the GDCA said in a Facebook post.
"This is an amazing opportunity for any female players aged 13 years and over (as at 31.12.2021), providing a pathway for them to better their hockey experience and skills!!!
"Having a CL1 team in the competition for a number of years, it is great to now be able to provide such a pathway for our female players."
Over the years, the GDHA has produced a number of outstanding local, state, and national female representatives.
Most recently, the Goulburn Under 15s Girls' team won the Indoor State Championships in Orange, while its two Open Women's sides finished in third place.
This abundance of talent proves without question that the player pool is large enough to supply two local teams. The only variables are interest and availability, which the association believes will not be impediments.
Though the specifics are still a work in progress, the GDHA said, it did outline some of the logistics of the new side.
Both women's teams would train together in one squad, with the sides chosen week-to-week depending on availability. The Division Two team would play primarily on Sundays, mostly at venues in Canberra, with the occasional Saturday home game.
Players wishing to take part will also need to be registered GDHA members in one of the local teams which plays each week.
Anybody interested in registering can do so here. For more information, please contact the Goulburn District Hockey Association through its Facebook page.
